"The purpose of this course is to develop a deeper understanding of the historical and philosophical underpinnings of technique, primarily those dealing with form and color.

The first lessons will deal with illumination and form and will be focused on the human form. You will see me lecture on the historical evolution of form's importance to artists and its relationship to the origins of perspective.

Exercise studies are proposed with emphasis on organizing the light mass into a hierarchical continuity while considering the shift in temperature from light to turning to shadow.

The second part of the class is focussed on color and its rise in importance from the time of Delacroix through the impressionists and post-impressionists. The shift in orientation from the spectatorial (objective) to the immersive (subjective) will be discussed. The bridge between tonality and chroma will be described in terms of the relative temperatures of the light, the chromatic environment and the resulting shadows.

Students can see recorded demonstrations and then they have suggested exercise studies based on their understanding of the lectures".
